Hollywood Chamber to honor Ken Ehrlich with star on Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that television producer Ken Ehrlich will be honored with the 2,541st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. PST. The star in the category of Television will be dedicated in front of the historic Capitol Records Building at 1750 N. Vine Street.

“It is time we honor the man who successfully elevated and transformed the artists and their music we love into memorable moments on live Television,” said Leron Gubler, President of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “Ken Ehrlich’s magical productions have touched millions of people watching these shows around the world and we are pleased to welcome him to our family of stars on Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

The star ceremony will be streamed live on www.walkoffame.com.

Helping emcee and Hollywood Chamber President/CEO Leron Gubler to unveil the star will be John Legend, Stevie Wonder and LL Cool J.

While the Grammy Awards are what Ken Ehrlich is best known for, his 47-year history as a television producer is filled with living examples of how Ehrlich’s creative spark and judgment has left viewers with memorable moments on the small screen, whether they be a studio full of blues legends paying tribute to Muddy Waters (“Soundstage” 1974), 350,000 fans in Times Square celebrating the NFL kickoff season with Bon Jovi, Enrique Iglesias and Alicia Keys (NFL KICKOFF SHOW, 2003), or Mick Jagger and Buddy Guy closing the show in the East Room of the White House with special guest President Barack Obama singing “Sweet Home Chicago” (In Performance at the White House; Red, White and Blues, 2012). All of these moments and so many more have come to be known as “Ken Ehrlich moments,” and they’re the most admired, and most imitated segments of live event television.

Among Ehrlich’s many achievements and innovations in the world of music television are the creation of the “MTV Movie Awards” and the “VH1 Divas” shows, which changed the face of music and led to the rise of female artists in popular music. Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Alicia Keys, Celine Dion and many more benefitted from appearances on Divas shows. For the past several years, Ken and his company AEG Ehrlich Ventures LLC, have produced a series of shows from the East Room of the White House and have brought artists from Bob Dylan, Justin Timberlake, Aretha Franklin to Ariana Grande, BB King and others in performance in front of the First Family. In 2014, Ehrlich achieved a remarkable hat-trick, producing the 56th Grammy Awards show and then moving next door to the LA Convention Center to bring Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and a room full of superstars together to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. The latter show was so successful that CBS network repeated it an unprecedented second time within the week the following Wednesday night!

Ehrlich believes that artistic excellence in music is a moveable feast, and demonstrates his commitment to that premise by, as he says, ‘connecting the dots.’  His creation of the concept of Grammy moments’ musical performances which unite artists from different generations, genres or disciplines that ultimately go to demonstrate the universal nature of music and seeks to unite generations. Whether it be Beyonce and Tina Turner, Eminem and Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Grohl and Joe Walsh, Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand, Bruno Mars, Sting, Rihanna and the sons of Bob Marley, Ehrlich brings people together and creates television experiences that are unique and unifying. So much so that in addition to numerous awards and nominations, he has been honored by the Producers Guild of America with its Visionary Award, and Billboard Magazine has named him one of the “Power 100” in the music industry. But beyond all the star-studded spectacles that Ehrlich has created and produced over the years, he is most proud of shows he has done that have served to make a difference. Among those shows are an HBO special he did in 1988 that paid tribute to the contribution of our Vietnam vets; an epic celebration of Nelson Mandela upon his release from prison; the reopening of the New Orleans Superdome one year after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans (U2 and Green Day performed), and then a similarly-themed six hour special aired only three weeks after Katrina from Madison Square Garden which raised $10M for the residents of that city; and a tribute to the people of New York City and John Lennon, presented two weeks after 9/11. He also produced the US side of the Live 8 event in 2005.

Ehrlich has always been available when called upon to contribute his creativity as well as his staff in support of charitable causes. He produced several all-star non-televised events for Katie Couric’s Colon cancer organization, produced several more for Los Angeles’ Entertainment Industry Foundation, and in addition to being a member of the Board of Directors of the Grammy Museum, has produced and raised significant funds for the Museum through benefits, evenings at the Museum, etc. He has produced several City of Hope Award dinners, and a series of fundraising concerts in support of the fight against breast cancer (for Lifetime Television). In the last two presidential campaigns, he produced some extremely high profile and influential benefits for President Barack Obama.  In 2011, Ken directed Celine Dion’s Las Vegas show, which is one of Las Vegas’ most successful and long running star driven offerings.

He is a longstanding member of both the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America and he has maintained a strong supporting stance of the importance of keeping entertainment industry jobs here in Hollywood.

Hollywood Chamber to honor Dick Gregory with star on Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that Dick Gregory will be honored with the 2,542nd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, February 2, 2015. The star in the category of Live Theatre/Performance will be dedicated at 1650 Vine Street near Hollywood & Vine. “We are proud to honor Dick Gregory with a star on the Walk of Fame during Black History month. He has given so much to the world with his wisdom through his work in entertainment,” stated Leron Gubler, President of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and emcee of the ceremonies.

The star ceremony will be streamed live exclusively on www.walkoffame.com

The day after the ceremony the celebration will continue with the Dick Gregory & Friends All Star Tribute and Toast on Tuesday, February 3, at 8:00 p.m. at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre, 1615 N. Vine Street in Hollywood.

Richard Claxton Gregory aka Dick Gregory is a comedian, civil rights activist, author, recording artist, actor, philosopher and anti-drug crusader. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Gregory began his career as a comedian while serving in the military in the mid 1950s. He was drafted in 1954 while attending Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. After being discharged in 1956, with a desire to perform comedy professionally, he moved to Chicago.

Gregory attributes the launch of his career to Hugh Hefner, who watched him perform at Herman Roberts Show Bar. Hefner hired Gregory to work at the Chicago Playboy Club as a replacement for comedian Professor Irwin Corey.

By 1962, Gregory had become a nationally-known headline performer, selling out nightclubs, making numerous national television appearances, and recording popular comedy albums. Gregory, whose style was detached, ironic, and satirical, gained the attention of audiences with his political and controversial stand up acts. By being both outspoken and provocative, he became a household name and opened many doors for Black entertainers.

As an influential American comedian, he has used his voice to convey to both white and black audiences his message on civil rights. His social satire helped change the way white Americans perceived black American comedians since he first performed in the public arena.

By October of 1963, Dick Gregory was one of the highest paid entertainers in the world. At that time, he answered the call of Medgar Evers to come to Mississippi  to join the movement. His life was forever changed.  Gregory went to Selma, Alabama and spoke for two hours on a public platform two days before the voter registration drive known as “Freedom Day.” Gregory later became more involved in struggles for civil rights, activism against the Vietnam War, economic reform and anti-drug issues and other matters.

In 2000, Gregory was honored at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., by a sold out house with special tributes by Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr., Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Cicely Tyson, Mark Lane, Marion Barry and many more.

Gregory is listed as No. 82 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of all time. He has appeared in numerous films including: “Steppin: The Movie,” “Letter to the President,” “Malcolm X: A Search for Identity,” “In Remembrance of Martin,” “The Hot Chick,” “Children of the Struggle,” and many more. He has written 14 books and has 15 comedy albums that contain his stand up acts and his political commentary.

He has been married to Lillian Gregory since 1959 and on the day of his star ceremony they will also be celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary. They have 10 children.

Celebrities, politicians and statesmen alike from the Kennedy family to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Marlon Brando sought Gregory’s wisdom and counsel; many still do so today.
